Leadership Minor



Overview of the Leadership Development Minor

The Leadership Development Minor is available to ANY undergraduate student at LSU.  The leadership skills developed in this minor are applicable to any profession and any context including business, government, non-profits, healthcare, politics and churches.

The minor consists of three components totaling 18 semester hours:
  1. Leadership core courses – 9 hours
  2. Leadership internship – 3 hours
  3. Leadership electives – 6 hours
The 6 hours of electives allow students to utilize a variety of electives from around campus to supplement the core curricula. The electives also allow them to take courses within their major curricula that are appropriate for a leadership development minor. We will collaborate with any department that has suitable elective courses so the minor will work for their students. 

The leadership internship provides a strong mechanism for integrating academic coursework with practical leadership experience. Students are asked to engage in some type of leadership activity, which may be a formal office in a student organization or more informal types of leadership. 



Why create this minor?

One of LSU's fundamental roles is to develop tomorrow's leaders. In addition, most organizations report they are hungry for new leadership talent and come to LSU looking for that talent. Yet, there was no systematic academic mechanism on campus for students to a) develop a complete set of skills needed to lead organizations and communities, and b) obtain formal transcript recognition that can be marketed to future employers. 

As a result, students from many curricula will find themselves thrust into leadership roles within their profession and chosen organizations without complete preparation.
This minor will enable students from any curricula to develop the skills and competencies for leadership in any setting, including organizations and communities. It is designed to be taken in conjunction with any major/curricula as leadership will be taught from a broad perspective rather than a single disciplinary perspective. 

Why is it called a minor in Leadership "DEVELOPMENT"?

This minor specifically develops leadership skills, not just an intellectual understanding of leadership. Students will take a progression of courses that move them from the self-awareness needed for leadership all the way through an internship experience where they practice skills learned. By focusing on competency, we will be able to market these students to employers, graduate and professional schools as having demonstrated the ability to lead, not just having learned about leadership. 

Do I have to be in any specific major to sign up for this minor?
NO! This minor enables students from any curricula to develop the skills and competencies for leadership in any setting, including organizations and communities. It is designed to be taken in conjunction with any major/curricula as leadership will be taught from a broad perspective rather than a single disciplinary perspective. 


When will classes be offered?

The core classes needed for this minor are offered every fall and spring semester.  HRE is often offered during intersessions.  Only the internship class is offered in the summer.


What do I have to do to add this minor?

Contact your course advisor in the department/college of your major to declare this minor for your program of studies.

Will this be marketable to employers?

The short answer is a resounding YES! Leadership skills are one of the most important characteristics employers look for in today’s graduates. Students from all majors who have developed leadership competency are highly sought after. This minor should make LSU a premier source of employment and professional/graduate school candidates as it will be one of the few universities offering such a minor. 

How will the minor help me market myself to employers?

By creating a minor, we are offering students a way to make their leadership skills much more marketable. This minor will provide students a formal credential through transcript documentation that certifies they have developed leadership competency and help them be more competitive in the marketplace. In addition, students can put the minor on their resumes along with their major.  The internship provides a marketable project to demonstrate your skills to employers.


Will this minor help me if I am going on for a graduate/professional degree?

Yes. Many graduate programs are looking for evidence of leadership ability and potential in their applicants. This includes technical as well as non-technical degrees. For example, even medical schools are looking for applicants with leadership experience.

HRE 2723 - Introduction to Leadership Development (3) F, S An introduction to leadership and leadership development. Emphasis is placed on students understanding their personal traits, values, characteristics and developmental tasks as a foundation for leadership development.
HRE 2724 - Introduction to Leadership Development (3) Honors S An introduction to leadership and leadership development. Emphasis is placed on students understanding their personal traits, values, characteristics and developmental tasks as a foundation for leadership development.
HRE 3723 – Leadership Concepts and Principles (3) F, S This course is a survey course of leadership theory, concepts and research. Emphasis will be on understanding the foundational concepts of modern leadership.
HRE 3724 – Leadership Concepts and Principles (3) Honors S This course is a survey course of leadership theory, concepts and research. Emphasis will be on understanding the foundational concepts of modern leadership.
HRE 4723 – Advanced Leadership Development (3) F, S Prereq: HRE 2723 and 3723. This advanced course focuses on developing the leadership skills students need to effectively lead organizations and communities to achieve their vision and goals.
HRE 4724 – Advanced Leadership Development (3) Honors F Prereq: HRE 2724 and 3724. This advanced course focuses on developing the leadership skills students need to effectively lead organizations and communities to achieve their vision and goals.
HRE 4804 – Internship (3) F, S, Sum Prereq: HRE 4723/4724 or Concurrent Enrollment in 4723/4724. Students in this minor will be expected to complete 3 hours of internship during which they engage in leading some type of organization, initiative or project to practice and demonstrate mastery of leadership skills.

What if I want to request a new course be approved as an elective?

We are quite happy to entertain requests from students to have other courses either a) added to the approved elective list or b) substituted for an individual's program. Here are the criteria we use when reviewing courses as a possible elective:
  • Courses that would enhance specific skills important to leading organizations and people. Examples include communications, management, psychology, etc.
  • Courses that would provide a foundation of understanding for societal leadership. Examples include history, geography, political science, etc. 
  • Courses that would address specific leadership issues that cut across professions. Examples include race, gender, globalization, education in society, culture, ethics, religion, technology, etc.
  • Courses that address leadership in specific professions. Examples include air force, agriculture, education, HRD, early childhood programs, athletic training, etc.

What will not be approved are courses that might build skills specific to a discipline that leaders might need as a technical base, but do not fit into one of the above categories. So, for example, to be in a leader in HRD, you need more than just the Managing the HRD function class, but the others build the technical base, not leadership skills.
