Ph.D. Program

The Ph.D. program strongly emphasizes linking theory, research and practice through scholarly research and preparing students to be competitive scholars and reflective practitioners in the field as they move through the program. The graduate programs in HRLD have achieved a “superior” rating (the highest possible) in LSU’s rigorous program review process. It is generally viewed as one of the top programs in the U.S.

Unlike many other disciplines, the Ph.D in HRLD is as valuable in practice as it is for an academic career. The program is flexible enough to allow students to tailor their degree program to prepare them for advanced practice or for an academic career. The program is specially designed to meet the needs of working adult students as well as full-time students. All graduate courses are taught in the evening from 4:30 – 7:30 pm.

Because so many working professionals are enrolled in the program, classes are a dynamic adult learning environment in which students share experiences from a wide variety of organizational settings and apply new learning to those environments. Students learn from each other as much as from the professors.

The program ensures students learn high-level research skills through core research courses. Students have the flexibility to generate their own research agenda with qualitative, quantitative, and/or theory building research methodologies.

Faculty advisors act as a mentor to challenges students' thoughts and foster students' ability to conduct research independently. The doctoral experience is a close collaboration between the student and his/her chair.

Highlights include: prepares students for careers as an academic scholar or as an advanced practitioner preparation for Human Resource, Leadership and Organization Development careers intensive research-oriented curriculum deep involvement in academic research a flexible research agenda to meet a variety of career objectives
